From Karen Stafford, School District of Washington in Washington, Missouri.

My sixth grade classes do a sound composition project (provided it's a class of relatively good behavior!). After warning the teachers ahead of time and setting strict guidelines, my students (in groups) take ordinary tape recorders and go around recording run-of-the-mill sounds such as balls bouncing, doors squeaking, etc. The sounds get recorded into the computer using CoolEdit. Each group works with CoolEdit to manipulate the sounds and create some of the coolest stuff ever. They can actually see how their changes work the sound waves, get an idea of what "noise" really is, and see what causes bigger waves and what causes smaller waves. Below are two examples You will need some type of MP3 player):

Submission Guidelines

  1. Please secure parental permission for submitting any photographs where individual students can be seen clearly. (This is not necessary for a group shot, but for any picture that contains close-ups of up to 5-6 people). Written permission is the best. If possible, please mail a copy of the written permission note to us. E-mail for the mailing address or fax number. This is not required, but it is suggested that you obtain a copy of written permission. If it is your school's policy to obtain permission to have student pictures be included on your school's website, this step will probably not be necessary.
  2. Please do not send any student names. The teacher's name and school will be used. Please indicate whether or not you want a link to your e-mail or website.
  3. All digital images need to be in .jpg form. They will resized to a thumbnail, which will link to your original image .
  4. If you send in regular photographs, please include a stamped, self-addressed envelope if you would like it returned. Please see our contributions page to submit files via our online form.
  5. Recordings may also be mailed. A small audio clip will be made from a portion of the recording. (Audio files are large, so an entire song may not be possible. There are also copyright considerations in some cases). All recordings will be on this site in both .wav and RealAudio format. (RealAudio and MP3's load much faster.) You may also submit a recorded clip in .wav or RealAudio format via e-mail. MIDI compositions are also accepted. Please send title of composition and grade leve of any compositions.
  6. Video clips can also be included, provided you have secured the same permissions as for photographs. You may send .avi extensions on video clips. We will convert them to MPEGS for faster download time.
  7. Please provide information on any particular song or product that's being represented in the pictures or recordings, along with the company name, composer, or publisher, so proper credit can be given.
  8. All submissions will remain on the site for a minimum of three months, then will be rotated depending on quantity.
