The Julliard School was founded in 1905. It was named the Institute of Musical Art at that time. A bequest from Augustus Juilliard established the Juilliard Graduate School, which merged with the Institute of Musical Art in 1926. Later, dance and drama departments were added so the name became The Juilliard School, but the school's beginnings are entrenched in the musical arts.

Out of the thousands of students that apply to The Juilliard School, only a few hundred students are admitted into their programs. The Juilliard School prides itself on providing gifted students with high education and artistic standards of excellence.

Talented students from all over the world apply at The Juilliard School. It's located in the heart of New York City, which is known for its museums, theaters, operas and ballet companies. New York City offers a unique opportunity for music students to be immersed in a culture of art and music that spawned the Broadway theater productions.
